
Space Radiation
Space radiation refers to the high-energy particles and electromagnetic radiation that originate from the sun, stars, and other celestial bodies. These particles and radiation can pose a significant threat to human health and spacecraft electronics in space. The most common types of space radiation include solar particle events, galactic cosmic rays, and trapped radiation. Solar particle events are short bursts of high-energy particles that are emitted by the sun during solar flares. Galactic cosmic rays are high-energy particles that originate from outside our solar system and can penetrate deep into spacecraft. Trapped radiation refers to the particles that are trapped in the Earth's magnetic field and can be hazardous to astronauts in low Earth orbit. Space radiation can cause a range of health effects, including radiation sickness, cancer, and damage to the central nervous system. To protect astronauts and spacecraft from space radiation, engineers use shielding materials and design spacecraft to minimize exposure.
