Magnetic Field


In space and astronautical engineering, a magnetic field is a force field that is created by moving electric charges. Magnetic fields are present throughout the universe and are essential for many space-related technologies, including spacecraft propulsion, navigation, and communication. The Earth's magnetic field, for example, protects the planet from harmful solar radiation and is used by spacecraft to orient themselves in space. Magnetic fields are also used to confine plasma in fusion reactors, which could one day provide a clean and virtually limitless source of energy. In space, magnetic fields are generated by the movement of charged particles in the solar wind and can cause a variety of phenomena, including auroras and magnetic storms.
