Calcium Metabolism


Calcium metabolism refers to the processes involved in the absorption, transport, storage, and utilization of calcium in the body. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, calcium metabolism is of particular importance due to the effects of microgravity on bone health. In the absence of gravity, bones lose calcium and become weaker, leading to an increased risk of fractures and other bone-related injuries. Astronauts must therefore follow a strict exercise regimen and consume adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D to maintain bone health during spaceflight. Additionally, research is ongoing to develop new technologies and interventions to mitigate the negative effects of microgravity on calcium metabolism and bone health.
