Soyuz Spacecraft


The Soyuz spacecraft is a series of spacecraft designed for the Soviet space program by the Korolev Design Bureau (now RKK Energia) in the 1960s, and it continues to be in service today. The Soyuz succeeded the Voskhod spacecraft and was originally built as part of the Soviet Manned Lunar program. The spacecraft is launched on a Soyuz rocket, the most frequently used and most reliable launch vehicle in the world to date. The Soyuz spacecraft is used to carry crew members to and from the International Space Station (ISS). It has a modular design, consisting of three parts: the Orbital Module, the Descent Module, and the Service Module. The Orbital Module is where the crew lives and works, the Descent Module contains the seats for the crew members during launch, reentry, and landing, and the Service Module contains the systems needed for life support, electrical power, thermal control, and propulsion.
