Segmented
Segmented refers to a design or structure that is divided into distinct parts or sections. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, segmented structures are often used in the construction of large space-based observatories and antennas. These structures are designed to be launched in separate segments and then assembled in space, allowing for larger structures than could be launched in one piece. Segmented mirrors, for example, are used in telescopes to create larger apertures for better resolution. Segmented antennas are used in communication satellites to provide larger apertures for better signal strength. Segmented structures also allow for redundancy, as individual segments can be replaced or repaired if necessary without affecting the entire structure.
