Gamma Radiation
Gamma radiation is a type of electromagnetic radiation that is highly energetic and has a very short wavelength. It is produced by the decay of atomic nuclei and is often associated with nuclear reactions and radioactive decay. Gamma radiation is extremely penetrating and can pass through many materials, including concrete and steel. It is also ionizing, meaning that it can strip electrons from atoms and molecules, which can cause damage to living tissue. In space and astronautical engineering, gamma radiation is a significant concern for astronauts and spacecraft, as exposure to high levels of gamma radiation can cause radiation sickness and increase the risk of cancer. Shielding materials and radiation detectors are used to protect astronauts and spacecraft from gamma radiation.
