
Blood Pressure Regulation
Blood pressure regulation refers to the physiological mechanisms that maintain the arterial pressure within a narrow range to ensure adequate perfusion of vital organs. In space and astronautical engineering context, blood pressure regulation is of utmost importance due to the effects of microgravity on the cardiovascular system. In microgravity, the body's fluid distribution changes, leading to a decrease in blood volume and a subsequent drop in blood pressure. This can result in orthostatic intolerance, a condition where astronauts experience dizziness and fainting upon standing up. To counteract this, astronauts engage in regular exercise and use lower body negative pressure devices to simulate gravity and maintain blood pressure. Additionally, medications such as alpha-1 agonists and beta blockers may be used to regulate blood pressure in space.
