Radiation Control


Radiation Control is the practice of protecting astronauts and spacecraft from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation in space. This includes designing spacecraft with radiation shielding materials, monitoring radiation levels in space and on spacecraft, and developing protocols for astronaut radiation exposure limits and mitigation strategies. Radiation in space comes from a variety of sources, including solar flares, galactic cosmic rays, and trapped radiation in the Earth's magnetic field. Exposure to high levels of radiation can cause acute radiation sickness, increase the risk of cancer, and damage electronic equipment on spacecraft. Therefore, radiation control is a critical aspect of space and astronautical engineering to ensure the safety and success of space missions.
