In space and astronautical engineering, alkaline refers to a type of fuel cell that uses potassium hydroxide (KOH) as an electrolyte. Alkaline fuel cells (AFCs) were one of the first types of fuel cells to be developed and were used by NASA in the Apollo missions to generate electricity and drinking water.
