They are preferred over other power sources in missions that require a long-lasting and reliable power supply, such as deep space missions, because they can operate for decades without maintenance. RTGs are also used in remote locations on Earth, such as in Antarctica, where solar power is not feasible due to the lack of sunlight during the winter months.
