Oxidation Resistance

Oxidation resistance is the ability of a material to resist the process of oxidation at high temperatures in the presence of oxygen or other oxidizing agents. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, oxidation resistance is a critical property for materials used in spacecraft and rocket engines. The extreme temperatures and harsh environments encountered during space missions can cause materials to oxidize and degrade, leading to equipment failure and mission loss. Therefore, materials with high oxidation resistance are essential for ensuring the reliability and longevity of space systems. Oxidation resistance is often achieved through the use of protective coatings, such as ceramic or metallic coatings, or through the addition of alloying elements that form a protective oxide layer on the surface of the material.
