Oxygen

Oxygen is a chemical element with the symbol O and atomic number 8. It is a member of the chalcogen group in the periodic table, a highly reactive nonmetal, and an oxidizing agent that readily forms oxides with most elements as well as with other compounds. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, oxygen is a critical component for human life support systems in spacecraft and space stations. It is used for breathing, as well as for the production of water and food. Oxygen is also used as an oxidizer in rocket engines, where it reacts with a fuel to produce thrust. The amount of oxygen required for space missions is carefully calculated and stored in tanks or generated on board using electrolysis or other methods.
