Mechanical Properties


Mechanical properties refer to the physical characteristics of materials that are related to their ability to resist deformation, fracture, or failure under applied loads or forces. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, mechanical properties are critical for designing and building spacecraft and their components that can withstand the extreme conditions of space, such as vacuum, temperature variations, radiation, and microgravity. The mechanical properties of materials used in space applications include strength, stiffness, toughness, ductility, fatigue resistance, creep resistance, and thermal expansion. These properties are determined through various testing methods, such as tensile testing, compression testing, bending testing, and impact testing. Engineers use the data obtained from these tests to select the appropriate materials and design structures that can meet the mechanical requirements of the mission.
