Ice Cores

Ice cores are cylindrical samples of ice drilled from ice sheets and glaciers. They provide a record of past climate and environmental conditions, including temperature, precipitation, atmospheric composition, volcanic activity, and even human activity. Ice cores are analyzed by measuring the physical and chemical properties of the ice, such as the size and shape of the ice crystals, the concentration of gases and particles trapped in the ice, and the isotopic composition of the water molecules. These measurements can be used to reconstruct past climate and environmental conditions over hundreds of thousands of years, providing valuable insights into the natural variability of the Earth's climate system and the impact of human activities on the environment.
