Fusion

Fusion is a process of combining atomic nuclei to form a heavier nucleus, releasing a large amount of energy in the process. In space and astronautical engineering, fusion is a promising technology for power generation in long-duration space missions. The most common fusion reaction involves the isotopes of hydrogen, deuterium, and tritium. The process requires high temperatures and pressures to overcome the electrostatic repulsion between positively charged nuclei. The energy released by fusion can be harnessed to generate electricity, and the byproducts of the reaction are non-toxic and do not contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Research is ongoing to develop practical fusion reactors for use in space and on Earth.
