Line-of-Sight
Line-of-sight refers to the unobstructed path between a transmitter and a receiver. In space and astronautical engineering, line-of-sight is an important concept for communication systems. Satellites in orbit use line-of-sight to communicate with ground stations or other satellites. The curvature of the Earth limits the range of line-of-sight communication, so satellites in low Earth orbit must be in constant motion to maintain communication with the ground. Additionally, obstacles such as mountains or buildings can block line-of-sight communication, so satellite communication systems must be designed to account for these obstructions. Line-of-sight is also important for navigation systems, such as GPS, which rely on signals from satellites to determine location and provide directions.
