Lightning


In space and astronautical engineering, lightning refers to the electrical discharge that occurs between the atmosphere and a spacecraft or launch vehicle during launch or landing. Lightning strikes can cause damage to the vehicle's electrical systems, avionics, and other critical components. To mitigate the risk of lightning strikes, launch pads and vehicles are equipped with lightning protection systems that include lightning rods, grounding systems, and surge protectors. These systems are designed to safely conduct the electrical charge away from the vehicle and into the ground. Additionally, weather monitoring systems are used to track thunderstorms and other atmospheric conditions that could pose a risk to the launch or landing. Lightning is a significant concern for space and astronautical engineers, as it can cause delays in launches and potentially jeopardize the safety of the crew and mission.
