Jettisoning


Jettisoning is the act of intentionally discarding or ejecting an object or a part of a spacecraft to reduce weight or to improve the safety of the mission. Jettisoning can be done in various ways, such as explosive bolts, pyrotechnic devices, or mechanical systems. Jettisoning is a critical operation in space missions, especially during launch and re-entry phases, where the spacecraft needs to shed weight to achieve the desired trajectory or to avoid collision with the Earth's atmosphere. Jettisoning can also be used to dispose of waste material or malfunctioning equipment that poses a risk to the mission. However, jettisoning can also have negative consequences, such as creating space debris that can endanger other spacecraft or the International Space Station.
