Iterative Decoding


Iterative decoding is a technique used in communication systems to improve the decoding of error-correcting codes. It involves the repeated exchange of information between the decoder and the demodulator, allowing the decoder to refine its estimates of the transmitted data. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, iterative decoding is used in satellite communication systems to improve the reliability of data transmission over long distances. This is particularly important in deep space missions, where the signal-to-noise ratio is low and errors in transmission can have serious consequences. Iterative decoding algorithms are also used in the design of error-correcting codes for space applications, such as the Reed-Solomon codes used in the Voyager spacecraft.
