Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating


Electron Cyclotron Resonance Heating (ECRH) is a method of heating plasmas in which electromagnetic radiation is used to transfer energy to the charged particles in the plasma. ECRH is based on the principle of cyclotron resonance, in which the frequency of the electromagnetic radiation matches the natural frequency of the charged particles in a magnetic field. When this resonance condition is met, the particles gain energy from the radiation, leading to an increase in the plasma temperature. ECRH is used in fusion research to heat the plasma to the temperatures required for fusion reactions to occur. It is also used in industrial plasma processing to create high-density plasmas for materials processing and surface modification.
