Coherence

Coherence refers to the property of an electromagnetic wave that describes the degree of correlation between its phase and amplitude at any two points in space and time. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, coherence is an important concept in the design and operation of laser-based systems, such as lidars, communication systems, and remote sensing instruments. Coherence length is a measure of the distance over which the wave maintains its coherence, and it is determined by the spectral width of the wave. Coherence time is a measure of the time over which the wave maintains its coherence, and it is determined by the spectral bandwidth of the wave. Coherence is essential for the proper functioning of many space-based instruments, such as interferometers, which rely on the interference of coherent waves to measure distances and angles with high precision.
