Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in plants and algae that is responsible for absorbing light energy from the sun and converting it into chemical energy through the process of photosynthesis. It is a complex molecule composed of a porphyrin ring, which is similar to the heme group found in hemoglobin, and a long hydrophobic tail. Chlorophyll is essential for the survival of most plants and algae, as it allows them to produce their own food and oxygen. In space and astronautical engineering context, chlorophyll is used as a biomarker to detect the presence of life on other planets, as it is a strong indicator of photosynthetic activity.
