Check Symbols

Check symbols are extra characters added to a message for the purpose of error detection. In space and astronautical engineering, check symbols are commonly used in communication protocols to ensure the accuracy of transmitted data. The most common type of check symbol is the checksum, which involves adding up all the bytes in a message and appending the result to the end of the message. The receiver then performs the same calculation and compares the result to the check symbol. If they match, the message is assumed to be error-free. If they do not match, the message is assumed to contain errors and must be retransmitted. Other types of check symbols include cyclic redundancy checks (CRCs) and parity bits.
