
Cyclic Redundancy Checks
Cyclic Redundancy Checks (CRC) are a type of error-detecting code commonly used in digital networks and storage devices to detect accidental changes to raw data. The CRC algorithm generates a fixed-size, checksum-like value that is appended to the end of the data block. When the data is received, the algorithm is run again and the resulting value is compared to the original checksum. If the values match, the data is assumed to be error-free. If they do not match, an error is detected and the data is either retransmitted or discarded. CRCs are particularly useful in space and astronautical engineering contexts where data transmission errors can have serious consequences. They are used in spacecraft communication systems, satellite telemetry, and deep space missions to ensure the integrity of data transmissions over long distances.
