Air Pressure

Air pressure is the force exerted by the weight of air molecules on a surface. In space and astronautical engineering, air pressure is an important factor to consider when designing spacecraft and space suits. In the vacuum of space, there is no air pressure, which means that spacecraft must be designed to withstand the pressure differentials between the inside and outside of the craft. Space suits must also be designed to maintain a suitable pressure for astronauts to breathe and survive in the vacuum of space. Air pressure is also a critical factor in the design of rocket engines, as the pressure of the exhaust gases determines the thrust produced by the engine. Finally, air pressure is important in the study of atmospheric re-entry, as the friction between the atmosphere and the spacecraft generates heat that can damage the craft if not properly managed.
