
VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range)
VOR, or VHF Omnidirectional Range, is a type of short-range radio navigation system used in aviation, enabling aircraft with a receiving unit to determine their position and stay on course by receiving radio signals transmitted by a network of fixed ground radio beacons. It uses frequencies in the very high frequency (VHF) band from 108 to 117.95 MHz. Developed in the United States beginning in the 1930s and deployed by 1946, VOR is the standard air navigational system in the world, used by both commercial and general aviation. In the VOR system, the relative bearing to the station is measured from the direction of a reference signal, which is modulated onto the carrier wave by a system of phased antennas. This allows the receiver to distinguish signals that are in phase from those that are out of phase, thus determining the direction to the station. VOR stations are often co-located with DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) to provide both bearing and distance to the aircraft.
