Supersonic Flow

Supersonic flow is a type of fluid flow where the velocity of the fluid exceeds the speed of sound. In space and astronautical engineering, supersonic flow is a critical factor in the design and operation of high-speed aircraft, rockets, and missiles. The behavior of supersonic flow is significantly different from subsonic flow, and it poses unique challenges in terms of aerodynamics, thermodynamics, and propulsion. Shock waves, expansion waves, and boundary layer separation are some of the phenomena associated with supersonic flow. The study of supersonic flow involves the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), wind tunnels, and other experimental techniques. The design of supersonic vehicles requires careful consideration of factors such as drag, lift, stability, and control. Supersonic flow has numerous applications in space exploration, including the design of re-entry vehicles, hypersonic vehicles, and scramjets.
