
Solid Rocket Engines
Solid Rocket Engines (SREs) are rocket engines that use solid propellants to generate thrust. The propellant is packed into a solid cylinder or grain, which is ignited at one end to produce hot gases that are expelled out of a nozzle at the other end. SREs are simple, reliable, and have a high thrust-to-weight ratio, which makes them ideal for use as boosters in launch vehicles and missiles. They are also used as upper stage engines, attitude control thrusters, and in spacecraft propulsion systems. However, SREs have limited controllability and cannot be throttled or shut down once ignited. They also produce a lot of vibration and shock during ignition, which can be damaging to delicate payloads. SREs come in various sizes and shapes, from small motors used in model rockets to large boosters used in heavy-lift launch vehicles.
