
Segmented Mirrors
Segmented mirrors are large mirrors composed of smaller segments that are individually controlled to adjust their shape and orientation. These mirrors are commonly used in space telescopes and other space-based observatories to achieve high resolution and sensitivity. The segmented design allows for easier transportation and assembly of the mirror, as well as the ability to correct for any deformations or misalignments that may occur during launch or operation. The individual segments are typically made of lightweight materials such as beryllium or silicon carbide, and are coated with a reflective material such as gold or aluminum. The control system for the segments uses a combination of mechanical actuators and computer algorithms to adjust the position and shape of each segment to within nanometer-level precision.
