Sacrificial Anode


In space and astronautical engineering, a sacrificial anode is a metal rod or bar that is intentionally installed on a spacecraft or satellite to protect it from corrosion. The anode is made of a metal that is more electrically active than the metal of the spacecraft, such as zinc or magnesium. When the two metals are in contact with an electrolyte, such as the ionized particles in the space environment, the anode corrodes instead of the spacecraft. This sacrificial corrosion process helps to extend the lifespan of the spacecraft and prevent damage to critical components. Sacrificial anodes are commonly used on spacecraft, satellites, and other space vehicles that are exposed to the harsh space environment.
