Plate Tectonics


Plate tectonics is the scientific theory that describes the large-scale motion of Earth's lithosphere. The lithosphere is divided into a number of plates that float on the underlying asthenosphere. These plates move and interact with one another at plate boundaries, which can result in the formation of new crust, the destruction of old crust, earthquakes, volcanic activity, and the formation of mountain ranges. Plate tectonics is driven by convection currents in the mantle, which cause the plates to move. The theory of plate tectonics has revolutionized our understanding of Earth's geology and has helped explain many geological phenomena, such as the distribution of earthquakes and volcanoes, the formation of ocean basins and continents, and the evolution of life on Earth.
