Nuclear Thermal Rockets

Nuclear Thermal Rockets (NTR) are a type of rocket engine that use nuclear reactions to heat a propellant, typically liquid hydrogen, to generate thrust. The nuclear reactor heats the propellant, which then expands through a nozzle to create thrust. NTRs have the potential to provide much higher specific impulse, or fuel efficiency, than traditional chemical rockets, which could enable faster and more efficient space travel. However, NTRs also present significant technical challenges, including the need for radiation shielding and the potential for nuclear accidents. Despite these challenges, NTRs have been studied and developed by various space agencies and companies for potential use in future space missions.
