Neutral Buoyancy Pools


Neutral Buoyancy Pools are large water tanks used to simulate microgravity conditions for astronauts to train for spacewalks and other extravehicular activities. The pools are designed to create a neutral buoyancy environment, where the buoyant force acting on the astronaut is equal to the force of gravity, allowing them to move around as if they were in space. The pools are equipped with full-scale mockups of spacecraft, space station modules, and other equipment that astronauts use in space. Astronauts wear specialized suits that are weighted to simulate the mass they would have in space, and they practice tasks such as repairing equipment, assembling structures, and conducting experiments. The pools are also used to train astronauts for emergency scenarios, such as rescuing a fellow astronaut or repairing a damaged spacecraft.
