Natural Frequencies

In space and astronautical engineering, natural frequencies refer to the frequencies at which a system oscillates when disturbed from its equilibrium position. These frequencies are determined by the system's mass, stiffness, and damping characteristics. In spacecraft design, it is important to consider the natural frequencies of the structure to ensure that they do not coincide with the frequencies of any external forces, such as vibrations from engines or thrusters. If the natural frequency of the spacecraft matches the frequency of an external force, resonance can occur, leading to excessive vibrations and potential damage to the spacecraft. Therefore, engineers must carefully design and test spacecraft to ensure that their natural frequencies are well outside the range of any external forces that they may encounter.
