Mercator Projection
Mercator Projection is a cylindrical map projection that represents the Earth's surface with straight meridians and parallels that intersect at right angles, thus preserving the angles and shapes of small areas. It was developed by Gerardus Mercator in 1569 and became the standard map projection for nautical purposes because it allows for easy navigation. However, it distorts the size and shape of land masses as they get farther from the equator, making high-latitude areas appear much larger than they actually are. This distortion is known as the Mercator projection's exaggeration of area. Despite its limitations, the Mercator projection is still widely used today, especially for world maps and navigation charts.
