Intertropical Convergence Zone
The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is a belt of low pressure that circles the Earth generally near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together. It is characterized by convective activity which generates often vigorous thunderstorms over large areas. The ITCZ plays a significant role in the global atmospheric circulation and is a major driver of the Earth's climate. It is also an important factor in the formation of tropical cyclones. The position of the ITCZ varies seasonally, moving northward in the Northern Hemisphere summer and southward in the Northern Hemisphere winter.
