Internet Protocol
Internet Protocol (IP) is a protocol used for communicating data across a packet-switched network using the Internet Protocol Suite. It is responsible for routing data packets between devices on different networks, and ensuring that they are delivered to the correct destination. IP provides a connectionless, best-effort delivery service, which means that it does not guarantee delivery or provide any error checking or correction. Instead, these functions are handled by higher-level protocols such as Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) or User Datagram Protocol (UDP). IP addresses are used to identify devices on a network, and are assigned by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who then assign them to their customers. IPv4 is the most widely used version of IP, but IPv6 is becoming increasingly important as the number of available IPv4 addresses is running out.
