Fluxgate Magnetometers

Fluxgate magnetometers are instruments used to measure magnetic fields in space. They work by using a ferromagnetic core that is driven into saturation by an alternating current. When an external magnetic field is applied, it causes the core to become unsaturated, which in turn causes a change in the magnetic field around the core. This change is detected by a pickup coil, which is then amplified and processed to provide a measurement of the external magnetic field. Fluxgate magnetometers are commonly used in space missions to study the magnetic fields of planets, moons, and other celestial bodies, as well as to measure the magnetic fields of the solar wind and the interstellar medium.
