Flow Separation
Flow separation is a phenomenon in aerospace engineering where the boundary layer of a fluid flow detaches from a solid surface, resulting in a disruption of the smooth flow pattern. This occurs when the pressure gradient along the surface becomes adverse, causing the flow to transition from a laminar to a turbulent state. Flow separation can lead to a loss of lift, increased drag, and reduced overall performance of an aircraft or spacecraft. It is a critical consideration in the design and analysis of aerodynamic surfaces, such as wings, airfoils, and control surfaces. Understanding and managing flow separation is essential for optimizing the efficiency and stability of aerospace vehicles.
