FITS


Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) is a standard format used in the space and astronautical engineering field for the storage, transmission, and processing of scientific data and images. It is designed to be platform-independent and self-describing, allowing for easy exchange of data between different systems and software. FITS files consist of a header section that contains metadata about the data and an image or data section that contains the actual data. The format supports a wide range of data types, including images, spectra, and tables, and is commonly used in astronomy, astrophysics, and space science research.
