DME Interrogator


In the context of aerospace engineering, a DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) Interrogator is a ground-based or airborne electronic device used to measure the slant range distance between an aircraft and the ground station. The DME Interrogator sends out a pair of pulse sequences, which are received by the transponder at the ground station. The transponder then sends a reply back to the interrogator, which calculates the time it took for the signal to travel to the ground station and back. This time is then converted into distance, providing the aircraft with accurate information about its distance from the ground station. The DME Interrogator is a crucial component of modern navigation systems, enabling precise positioning and navigation of aircraft. It is particularly useful in poor visibility conditions, where visual navigation is not possible. The DME Interrogator works in conjunction with other navigation aids such as VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) and ILS (Instrument Landing System) to provide comprehensive navigation information to the aircraft.
