Density Waves

Density waves are a type of spiral pattern that can occur in the disk of a galaxy. They are caused by the gravitational interaction between the stars and the gas in the disk. As the gas moves in response to the gravitational forces, it can become compressed in certain regions, leading to an increase in the density of the gas. This increase in density can then lead to the formation of new stars. Density waves are thought to play an important role in the evolution of galaxies, as they can drive the formation of new stars and also transport gas and dust throughout the disk.
