Chemical Compounds

Chemical compounds are substances composed of two or more elements in fixed proportions that can be separated into simpler substances by chemical reactions. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, chemical compounds play a crucial role in rocket propulsion systems. The fuel and oxidizer used in rockets are chemical compounds that undergo a chemical reaction to produce hot gases that are expelled out of the rocket nozzle, generating thrust. The chemical compounds used as rocket propellants must have high energy content, be stable, and have predictable combustion characteristics. Additionally, chemical compounds are used in the construction of spacecraft materials, such as polymers and composites, and in the life support systems of spacecraft, such as air revitalization systems and water purification systems.
