Adsorbents
Adsorbents are materials that are used to remove impurities or contaminants from a gas or liquid stream through the process of adsorption. In the context of space and astronautical engineering, adsorbents are used in life support systems to remove carbon dioxide, humidity, and other impurities from the air inside spacecraft and habitats. Adsorbents can also be used to purify water and other liquids for consumption. The effectiveness of an adsorbent depends on its surface area, pore size, and chemical properties, as well as the properties of the gas or liquid being treated. Common adsorbents used in space applications include activated carbon, zeolites, and silica gel.
