Satellite Based Augmentation System


In the context of aerospace engineering, a Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) is a system that supports wide-area or regional augmentation through the use of additional satellite-broadcast messages. Such systems are commonly composed of multiple ground stations, located at accurately-surveyed points. The ground stations take measurements of one or more of the GNSS satellites, using this data to calculate the precise time, as well as the position of each satellite. These calculations are used to formulate correction algorithms, which are then sent to one or more SBAS satellites. The SBAS satellite then broadcasts these corrections over a wide area. The corrections are received by SBAS-enabled GNSS receivers, which apply them to the GNSS signals they receive, to achieve a higher level of accuracy. SBAS is used to improve the accuracy, integrity and availability of GNSS signals.
