
Safety Management Systems
In the context of aerospace engineering, Safety Management Systems (SMS) refer to a systematic approach to managing safety, including the necessary organizational structures, accountabilities, policies, and procedures. It is designed to identify potential hazards, assess the risks, and implement measures to mitigate those risks in the aerospace industry. The goal of an SMS is to enhance the safety of operations, reduce accidents, and improve overall performance. It is a proactive process that involves all levels of an organization, from top management to frontline workers. The four key components of an SMS in aerospace engineering are: safety policy, safety risk management, safety assurance, and safety promotion. Safety policy establishes senior management's commitment to continually improve safety; defines the methods, processes, and organizational structure needed to meet safety goals. Safety risk management determines the need for, and adequacy of, new or revised risk controls based on the assessment of acceptable risk. Safety assurance evaluates the continued effectiveness of implemented risk control strategies. And safety promotion includes training, communication and other actions to create a positive safety culture.
