Metallurgy
Metallurgy is the branch of materials science and engineering that studies the physical and chemical behavior of metallic elements, their intermetallic compounds, and their mixtures, which are called alloys. It is also the technology of metals: the way in which science is applied to the production of metals, and the engineering of metal components for use in products for both consumers and manufacturers. Metallurgists work to understand the properties of metals and how they can be manipulated to improve performance and durability. They also develop new alloys with improved properties, such as increased strength or corrosion resistance, and study the effects of processing techniques on the microstructure and properties of metals.
