Horse Latitudes
Horse Latitudes are subtropical regions located between 30 and 38 degrees both north and south of the equator. These regions are characterized by calm winds and high atmospheric pressure, which makes it difficult for sailing ships to make progress. The term 'horse latitudes' originated from the practice of sailors throwing horses overboard when they ran out of water, as they were unable to drink salt water and were therefore of no use. The calm winds in these regions made it difficult for ships to make headway, and they often became stranded for weeks or even months. In modern times, the term is used to describe any situation where progress is impeded by unfavorable conditions.
