
Horizontal Situation Indicator
In the context of aerospace engineering, the Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) is a complex, aircraft flight instrument that provides the pilot with a comprehensive and clear visual representation of the aircraft's orientation relative to its intended flight path. It combines the functions of a heading indicator and a VOR/ILS display, reducing pilot workload by lessening the number of scans that need to be made during instrument flight. The HSI displays the aircraft's heading at the top of the instrument, with a course pointer that can be rotated to match the desired course. A course deviation bar moves left or right to show the aircraft's position relative to the selected course. The HSI can also display information from an Automatic Direction Finder (ADF), allowing the pilot to navigate to non-directional beacons. The HSI is an essential instrument in modern aircraft, providing critical navigation and orientation information to the pilot, thereby enhancing safety and efficiency in flight operations.
