
Gamma-ray Telescopes
Gamma-ray telescopes are instruments designed to detect and image high-energy gamma rays emitted by celestial objects such as pulsars, supernovae, and black holes. These telescopes use a variety of techniques to detect gamma rays, including Compton scattering, pair production, and Cherenkov radiation. Compton telescopes use a detector made of a scintillating material to measure the energy and direction of gamma rays that scatter off electrons in the detector. Pair production telescopes use a detector made of a dense material to detect the electron-positron pairs produced when gamma rays interact with atomic nuclei. Cherenkov telescopes detect the faint blue light emitted when gamma rays interact with the Earth's atmosphere. Gamma-ray telescopes have been used to study a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including the acceleration of cosmic rays, the behavior of matter in extreme environments, and the nature of dark matter.
